Natural playgrounds do not require onerous amounts of daily maintenance to keep them safe and viable. In fact, decreasing maintenance in some areas of a natural playground enhances play value, and the nature-connection experience for children.
The design team, however, must take maintenance staff into account during the design process, and must make staff aware of long-term project goals. After all, it’s maintenance staff members who will ultimately be responsible for ensuring the project remains in the intended condition.
